How to get your AI key

The First Strides coach runs on Claude, Anthropic's AI, with your own personal key. You only pay for what you use, directly to Anthropic, with no subscription. It takes about 10 minutes, once. The key is separate from the First Strides Plus subscription, which unlocks the coach inside the app.

  1. Create an accountGo to console.anthropic.com and sign up with your email. It is a different account from the Claude chat app: it is used to run the AI inside apps.
  2. Add a few creditsIn the “Plans & Billing” section, buy credits: about $5 is enough. You only pay for what you use, it is not a subscription. Leave auto-reload turned off.
  3. Set a spending limitIn the “Limits” section, set a monthly cap, for example $5. That way you cannot overspend by mistake.
  4. Create the keyIn the “API Keys” section, tap “Create Key”, give it a name (for example First Strides) and copy it right away: it is shown only once.
  5. Paste it into the appIn First Strides go to Coach › “How to get the key” (or Settings) and paste the key. It stays saved only in your iPhone's Keychain.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost?

Usually a few cents for a chat and a few tens of cents for a weekly plan with videos (estimates: it depends on the model you choose and how much you use it). You can see your usage in the console, in the “Usage” section.

Is it safe?

The key stays in your iPhone's Keychain and is never sent to us. Don't share it: if you think it fell into the wrong hands, delete it in the console and create a new one.

What does Anthropic receive?

Only when you make a request and have given your consent in the app: a summary of your weight, meals, activity and notes, plus your message. See the privacy policy.

Do I also need First Strides Plus?

Yes. The coach, weekly plans with videos, meal plans and video search are part of First Strides Plus (€9.99 a year after a 7-day free trial). The key only pays for the AI you use. Weight, meals, shopping list, Apple Health and reminders work without either.

Console menu items may change name or position over time: look for the closest match.
